Where groups usually start
New York, NY · Flushing (Queens), Manhattan Chinatown
The New York metro area had the largest Chinese population of any US metro, about 865,000 people (Pew analysis of 2017-2019 ACS data, which includes those identifying as Taiwanese); a MTA travel guide calls Flushing the biggest Chinatown in New York City.
Los Angeles, CA · Chinatown, San Gabriel Valley
The Los Angeles metro area ranked second nationally with about 678,000 Chinese residents (Pew analysis of 2017-2019 ACS data, which includes those identifying as Taiwanese).
San Francisco Bay Area, CA · San Francisco Chinatown, San Jose
The San Francisco metro had about 582,000 Chinese residents and the separate San Jose metro about 239,000, ranking third and fourth nationally (Pew analysis of 2017-2019 ACS data).
Boston, MA · Boston Chinatown
The Boston metro ranked fifth nationally with about 174,000 Chinese residents (Pew analysis of 2017-2019 ACS data, which includes those identifying as Taiwanese).
Seattle, WA · Seattle area
The Seattle metro ranked sixth nationally with about 166,000 Chinese residents (Pew analysis of 2017-2019 ACS data, which includes those identifying as Taiwanese).
Washington, DC · Washington metro area
The Washington metro was seventh nationally with about 135,000 Chinese residents (Pew analysis of 2017-2019 ACS data, which includes those identifying as Taiwanese).
Chicago, IL · Chicago area
The Chicago metro was eighth nationally with about 135,000 Chinese residents (Pew analysis of 2017-2019 ACS data, which includes those identifying as Taiwanese).
Houston, TX · Bellaire Boulevard / Asiatown corridor
The Houston metro was tenth nationally with about 111,000 Chinese residents (Pew analysis of 2017-2019 ACS data); a local guide describes the Bellaire Boulevard corridor as a pan-Asian commercial district of roughly six square miles that requires a car to get around.
Common coach itineraries
Los Angeles → Las Vegas → Grand Canyon South Rim (3–4 days)
NTTO counted Nevada and California among the five most visited states for overseas package-tour visitors in 2024, with China the third-largest source market for package travelers (about 274,000 visitors).
| Leg | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles → Las Vegas | 270 | ~4 h |
| Las Vegas → Grand Canyon South Rim | 280 | ~4.5 h |
- Each leg is within the FMCSA 10-hour driving limit for passenger carriers, but a day that combines the Las Vegas–South Rim leg with sightseeing needs a planned rest break before the 15-hour on-duty window closes (49 CFR 395.5).
- Grand Canyon commercial tours pay NPS entrance fees by vehicle capacity: $8 per person for 1-25 passenger vehicles (children 15 and under exempt) or $300 per vehicle for 26+ passengers; card payment only, and the operator must hold a Commercial Use Authorization.
- Since January 1, 2026 nonresidents age 16 and over pay an extra $100 at 11 parks including Grand Canyon, including in commercial tour groups, unless covered by a Non-Resident Annual Pass ($250).
San Francisco → Yosemite → Los Angeles (4–5 days)
California is the third most visited state for overseas package-tour visitors (NTTO, 2024).
| Leg | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| San Francisco → Yosemite National Park | 195 | ~4.5 h |
| Yosemite National Park → Los Angeles | 313 | ~6 h |
- NPS advises relying on road signs rather than GPS when driving to Yosemite, and notes some roads close from November through May or June and tire chains may be required October through April.
- Yosemite is one of the 11 parks with the $100 nonresident fee (age 16+) that applies to commercial tour groups.
- The Yosemite–Los Angeles leg of about six hours is a full driving day when combined with park exit time; an operator may split it with an overnight stop.
San Diego → Los Angeles → San Francisco (5–6 days)
Los Angeles accounted for 12 percent and San Francisco 8 percent of entry traffic among overseas package-tour visitors in 2024 (NTTO), making a linked California route a natural fit for a coach.
| Leg | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| San Diego → Los Angeles | 120 | ~2 h |
| Los Angeles → San Francisco | 380 | ~5.75 h |
- Published estimates put typical Los Angeles–San Francisco driving near 5 hours 45 minutes, rising to 8+ hours in heavy traffic, so the departure time matters for the 15-hour on-duty window.
- Ask the operator how luggage is loaded for a multi-city route; motorcoaches have under-floor bays while minibuses rely on overhead and rear space.
New York → Philadelphia → Washington, DC (3–4 days)
New York led all states for overseas package-tour visitors in 2024 (806,000), and a 2018 NTTO analysis reported by Dragon Trail found nearly a quarter of Chinese visitors included New York City in their trip.
| Leg | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| New York → Philadelphia | 95 | ~1.75 h |
| Philadelphia → Washington, DC | 140 | ~2.5 h |
- Both legs are short; the driving-hours issue on this route is rush-hour I-95 congestion, which one published estimate says can stretch New York–Washington (about 225 miles) to 5-7+ hours.
- Many Chinese visitors do not enter through JFK or Newark (17-18% in 2018 per the Dragon Trail summary of NTTO data), so airport pickup city and trip start city often differ.
Boston → New York → Niagara Falls (4–5 days)
New York is the top state for overseas package-tour visitors (NTTO 2024), and Boston has the fifth-largest Chinese-American population among US metros (Pew), so the route links a visitor draw with a home community.
| Leg | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Boston → New York | 215 | ~4.25 h |
| New York → Niagara Falls | 400 | ~6.5 h |
- The New York–Niagara Falls leg is a published estimate of about 6.5 hours; actual routing varies, so treat it as a long driving day and confirm with the operator.
- A Boston–Niagara Falls through-trip is about 533 miles and 9h 41m in one published estimate, which exceeds a single 10-hour driving shift once stops are included, so an overnight in between is typical planning.
Dates that fill up coaches
Lunar New Year / Spring Festival · Late January to mid-February (lunar calendar); 2026: February 17; 2027: February 6 (PRC official holiday Feb 5-12, 2027)
China's Spring Festival holiday was nine days in 2026 (Feb 15-23), and Dragon Trail describes Chinese New Year as the peak season for three-generation family trips; community parades and festivals in US Chinatowns also draw coach groups.
Golden Dragon Parade, Los Angeles Chinatown, 2026: February 21 (127th annual, run by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of LA) · Flushing Lunar New Year Parade, Flushing, Queens, New York, 2026: February 21 · San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade and Street Fair, San Francisco, 2026: parade March 7, street fair March 7-8 (usually later than the holiday itself) · Houston Lunar New Year festivals, Houston, 2026: multiple events February 14-17 and 21
Qingming (Tomb-Sweeping Festival) · Early April; PRC holiday April 4-6 in 2026
A three-day public holiday in China; family groups in the US community may plan outings around the same weekend. No dedicated US coach event was sourced.
Labour Day holiday (China) · May 1-5 in 2026
A five-day PRC holiday that can prompt short-haul outbound trips; groups visiting the US typically need more than five days, so it mainly matters as a booking-demand marker.
Dragon Boat Festival · Usually June (lunar calendar); PRC holiday June 19-21 in 2026
Community dragon boat races in US cities draw spectator groups and teams that travel together.
Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival (34th edition), Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, New York, 2026: August 8-9
Mid-Autumn Festival · Usually September or early October (lunar calendar); 2026: September 25, PRC holiday September 25-27
A family reunion festival; community festivals in Chinatowns and extended-family gatherings create weekend group-transport demand.
SF Chinatown Autumn Moon Festival, Grant Avenue, San Francisco, 2026: September 19-20, presented by the Chinatown Merchants Association
National Day Golden Week (China) · October 1-7 each year; 2026: October 1-7 (seven days)
A seven-day PRC holiday and one of the longest travel windows for visitors from China, so outbound group arrivals and community family visits cluster in early October.
US rules and practicalities
Driver hours on multi-day tours
Federal rules for passenger-carrying drivers limit driving to 10 hours after 8 consecutive hours off duty, and bar driving after 15 hours on duty following 8 consecutive off-duty hours; weekly caps are 60 hours in 7 days or 70 hours in 8 days. On routes such as Los Angeles to Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, sightseeing and meal stops count against the on-duty window, so itineraries with a 6-hour leg plus a long attraction day usually need an overnight or a second driver.
National park fees for groups from abroad
Since January 1, 2026, nonresidents age 16 and over pay a $100 fee at 11 national parks (including Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Zion and Bryce Canyon) on top of regular entrance fees, and this applies to commercial tour groups. A Non-Resident Annual Pass costs $250 and can replace the fee for the passholder. Grand Canyon also charges commercial coaches by capacity ($300 per vehicle for 26+ passengers). Group organizers should ask the operator who pays and how the fee appears on the quote.
Airport arrivals for international groups
Arriving passengers clear passport control, then baggage claim and customs. Chicago O'Hare says it is rare for the process to take more than two hours, so plan the pickup well after the scheduled landing time. Chinese visitors holding 10-year B visas must also have a current EVUS enrollment (valid two years or until a new passport) before travel, per CBP. Operators usually plan the pickup time after landing rather than at scheduled arrival, and a charter at LAX must come from a company holding LAWA's Transportation Charter Party permit.
Tipping the driver and guide in the US
US tour companies commonly suggest tips on top of the tour price. One large student-tour company recommends about $3 per person per day for the bus driver, $8 per person per day for a tour director and about $2 per person for a local guide. Amounts differ by company, so groups should ask the operator what is customary for their trip and whether gratuity is included in the quote.
Mixed-generation family tours and Lunar New Year travel
Dragon Trail's research on Chinese family travel describes three-generation trips as a major pattern and Chinese New Year as the peak time for them. For coach planning this typically means more luggage per person, a wider age range (grandparents and children) and a preference for easy access to Chinese food, so groups should ask about step height, accessible seating, restroom availability and meal stops. Ask whether any driver or guide speaks Mandarin or Cantonese; the booking line itself works in English.
Vehicle size
One industry source says minibuses carry up to about 30 passengers and motorcoaches up to about 60, with motorcoaches offering under-floor luggage bays. Seat counts vary by operator, so confirm the exact capacity and luggage space for the group.
